History of the club house The 1830 Kelly’s directory gives one Charles Watson as a beer retailer hereabouts. On March 1st 1855, his daughter, Mary Ann Watson married one Isaac Colin who became the beer retailer here. The 1870 Kelly’s gives George Watson as the local blacksmiths. The 1871 census gives Isaac Colin as “Brewer & Licensed victualler” at “the Horseshoes”: first mention of the name. Is Isaacs brother-in-law now shoeing horses on the premises? The 1874 Kelly’s now expands the name to: “The Three Horseshoes Inn” 1882; Thomas Perry 1886:Alfred George Perry 1887: George & Susan Smith. 1908: Their son Frederick Smith becomes publican and carpenter, using the present garage as his workshop. “The Dunmow Brewery Buys the Premises”. 1951:Ernest & Mary Northwood become the new tenants. Ernie is also the village milkman, using the workshop as a bottling shop. 1966: Dunmow Brewery sells to Charringtons Brewery. 1970: Charles & Marion Probert 1977: Michael & Jackie Cornabe. 1977:Bass Charrington sell to Alfred & Olga Clark. As freeholders they extend the kitchen and build a cellar. Between 1979 and 1987 there were five changes of owner. In 1993
